Introduction

It’s an exciting holiday destination in a truly unique culture, though one which warmly welcomes westerners and much western influence. Thailand has a well developed infrastructure of hotels, air travel, good restaurants (with most serving some western food), roads and taxis in all the areas we cover. In addition almost everyone involved in the tourist industry in Thailand speaks some English, (although this doesn’t apply to most taxi drivers). The result is that a holiday in Thailand is relaxing and everything you could want is readily available. All this comes with a further big advantage, prices in Thailand are low, often a third to a fifth of the UK equivalent.

Geography:

The kingdom of Thailand lies in the heart of Southeast Asia, its shape and geography divide into four natural regions:

The mountainous North, with its profusion of multi-coloured orchids and  fascinating native handicrafts. Winter temperatures are sufficiently cool to permit cultivation of temperate fruits such as strawberries and peaches. Ideal golfing country with scenic and sometimes spectacular courses. The high Northeast Plateau, which still jealously guards its many archaeological and anthropological mysteries. There are few golf courses in the northeast

The Central Plain, one of the world's most fertile rice and fruit growing areas with a colourful traditional culture and way of life as well as the sandy beaches of the East Coast and vibrant cosmopolitan Bangkok. There are many courses, generally on flat terrain but always attractively sculptured from the surrounding land and usually well maintained

The peninsular South where the unspoiled beaches and idyllic islands complement economically vital tin mining, rubber cultivation and fishing. Several golf courses, scenic and of a high standard both in terms of course design and clubhouse facilities. More about Golf in Southern Thailand(Click Here)

The People

Thais are well-known for their friendliness and hospitality. A large majority of the 62 million citizens of Thailand are ethnic Thai and their prosperity has grown substantially in the last twenty years. Thailand has a small but significant middle class many of whom are enthusiastic golfers. Golf is still however beyond the means of the average Thai. Spoken and written Thai is incomprehensible to the casual visitor. However, English is widely understood and commonly used on street signs in urban areas, particularly in Bangkok.

Climate:

Thailand enjoys a tropical climate. Excluding the southern peninsula there are three distinct seasons-hot and dry from February to May (average temperature 34 degrees Celsius and 75% humidity); rainy with plenty of sunshine from June to October (average day temperature 29 degrees Celsius and 87% humidity); and cool from November to January (temperatures range from 32 degrees Celsius to below 20 degrees Celsius with a drop in humidity).

The south has two seasons. Phuket is hot from November to May and rainy from June to October. Samui is hot from May to October and rainy from November to April.

Passport and Visa Requirements

British citizens permanently resident in the U.K. may travel to Thailand as tourists and a 30 day visa is normally issued on arrival on presentation of their full (10 year) passport. The passport must be valid for six months beyond their date of return. All other nationals are advised to contact the Thai Embassy in London for information about visa requirements

Health Formalities.

The Thai authorities currently impose no inoculation or other heath requirements for British citizens arriving from the U.K. However Thailand is a tropical country, malaria and other tropical diseases do exist and all travelers are strongly advised to seek the advice of a qualified doctor at least six weeks before travel.

Clothing:

Light, cool clothes are sensible and a jacket may be useful for dining in top restaurants. Shorts (except knee length walking shorts), sleeveless shirts, tank tops and other beach-style attire are considered inappropriate dress when not actually at the beach or in a resort area. For Golf, normal golfing attire, slacks, golf style shirts tucked into trousers and soft spike shoes is advised  Jackets and ties are NOT required for the clubhouse. When Ladies are visiting temples, shorts and tops that do not cover the shoulders are not acceptable. Business and Shopping hours:

Most commercial concerns in Bangkok operate on a five-day week, usually from 8am to 5pm. Many shops and large stores open seven days a week from 10am to 10pm. Government offices are generally open between 8.30am and 4.30pm with a noon to 1pm lunch break, Monday to Friday except on public holidays. Banks are open Mondays to Fridays from 9.30am to 3.30pm except on public holidays. Cash machines (ATM’s) are widely available in Bangkok and Tourist areas and usually accept Visa, Mastercard and Electron.

Post and Phones:

Thailand's mail service is reliable and efficient. Major hotels provide basic postal services on their premises. Provincial post offices are usually open from 8.00am. to 4.30pm.

International Roaming Mobile Phone : Most mobile phones work in Thailand although you should check with your network provider. A Subscriber Identity Module Card (SIM Card) is now available for Thai and foreign customers who are traveling in Thailand and this may be worth the cost. The SIM Card must be used in conjunction with a Digital GSM mobile phone within the 900-MHz range or a Digital PCN mobile phone within the 1800-MHz range. This covers most UK phones.

 Fax, Internet and E-mail :

All of Thailand's leading hotels offer facsimile (fax) and e-mail services. Numerous private businesses offer such facilities. Thailand has been expanding its information service for residents and tourists alike through the Internet system. Services are now available at Thailand's leading hotels and at the many " Cyber-Cafes " that are common in all major tourist destinations.

Electricity:

The electric current is 220 volt AC (50 cycles) throughout the country. Many different types of plugs and sockets are in use. Travelers with electric shavers, hair dryers, tape recorders and other appliances should carry a plug adapter kit.

 Tap water:

Tap water is clean but drinking from it directly should be avoided. Bottled water is recommended
