Introduction

A lot of first time visitors aren't quite sure what to expect when first arriving in the capital of exotic Thailand and some may be disappointed by their first impressions on the way into town - endless high rise buildings, busy expressway flyovers and billboards of western companies advertising in English. Yet while Bangkok has undoubtedly embraced westernisation and modernisation, you only need to look a little under the surface to see that it remains undeniably a Thai place at heart.

What to see

In between the skyscrapers and sophisticated shopping centres there's still the remarkable Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Dawn and many more. It’s Asia, so the poor live alongside the rich. Don’t be surprised if your hotel overlooks less salubrious buildings. Traditions live on too: for example, you’ll probably find a dedicated spirit house built for good luck alongside almost every major building, or to see files of Buddhist monks making their early morning alms round.

Climate.

Amidst all of this is what many find one of Asia's most interesting and exciting cities, but it does have it's fair share of problems also - not least of which is the heat. Due to its location in the tropics, Bangkok's average day time temperature is rarely much below 30 degrees centigrade at any time of year and the night time temperature is not much cooler. In terms of average temperature it’s arguably the hottest city in the world. The maximum temperature rarely rises above 35 degrees but can occasionally top 40 degrees during the hot season in April / May. Fortunately almost every building, however humble, or vehicle in Bangkok is air-conditioned so it’s tolerable

Travel within Bangkok

Getting around Bangkok is easy. Fortunately the Thais accept that the rest of the world will never understand their strange script and they’ve translated all necessary signs into English. (This doesn’t apply to rural Thailand). The heat, combined with the humidity and pollution, makes walking a sizable distance in Bangkok almost impossible, however since the completion of the Skytrain and more recently the Subway system, travel times have reduced dramatically. Both have very limited networks, the skytrain is overhead, the subway beneath the ground, however both are pleasant to use. To complete your journey within town we would suggest taxis. They are cheap and plentiful, although there are a lack of seatbelts and licensing requirements for drivers are minimal. Buses should be left to the locals.

Eating Out

Food is held in high regard by the Thai people and although they love their own distinctive cuisine they also like to eat western food. So you’ll find lots of fantastic Thai food and also a plethora of different western food, predominately American, Italian and French. All the hotels that we list have western food on their menu and most of the golf clubs serve some western dishes. If you like McDonalds, KFC and Starbucks you’ll see them too. Eating out becomes doubly pleasurable when you receive the bill, prices of western food are at least half of the equivalent in the UK, Thai food, probably a quarter.

The combined effect of the traffic, heat, humidity, noise, dirt, pollution and the unappealing look of much of the city makes some want to leave Bangkok almost as soon as they've arrived. Though this is understandable to an extent, Bangkok has a lot to offer those who persevere.
